Gurudwara Nanak Piao Sahib is a historical gurudwara, dedicated to the first sikh guru - Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. The gurudwara is situated on Grand Trunk Road. Gurudwara Sahib is built at the site, where Guru Nanak ji visited Delhi in 1505, during his first udasi (spiritual journey) and stayed at this place for sometime.

HISTORY OF GURUDWARA NANAK PIAO

Guru Nanak ji camped in a garden, dug a deep well here and set up a piao at this place. He offered food & water to the hungry & thirsty passers-by with his own hands. People gathered to meet the revered saint and Bhai Mardana and offered them gifts. Baba Nanak distributed all the received gifts to the needy & poor. Guru Nanak Dev ji made this place a pilgrimage site for the people of Delhi and nearby places. The garden that surrounds the gurudwara is the place where Baba Nanak delivered sermons and sang kirtan with Bhai Bala ji and Bhai Mardana ji.

History Of Gurudwara Nanak Piao Sahib

The owner donated the garden's land and this place became a public shrine after the name of Guru Nanak. Earlier it was called Piao Sahib, now it is known as Gurudwara Nanak Piao Sahib. The well that was used by Guru Nanak is still preserved, and you can see the well by visiting the gurudwara.

During one of those days, Guru Nanak ji saw a group of people who were crying bitterly. Nanak ji enquired about the cause of their suffering. People told him that they were crying because of the death of their elephant. Guru ji told them that the animal was not dead but it is sleeping. After hearing this, all of them went near the elephant and found that it was not dead. All of them fell at Guru Nanak ji's feet.

In 1505, the emperor of Delhi was Sikander Shah Lodhi. The news of this event soon reached the ears of emperor. A day came, when one the emperor's royal elephant died and Nanak ji to get the elephant back to life. Instead Guru Nanak ji refused and humbly replied that life & death are in God's hand. It was not possible for an ordinary man like him to interfere in God's hukam. The emperor was angry after listening these words. At emperor's order, Guru Sahib was imprisoned. Whilst, Guru Nanak ji was in prison, a damaging earthquake shook Delhi in 1505 AD. Many people thought that this earthquake was because Baba Nanak was imprisoned by the emperor and he has cursed the King & his empire. Chisti Sufi saints intervened in the matter and the emperor ordered to release Guru Nanak ji from the prison.
