Gurudwara Shri Ber Sahib
Gurudwara Shri Ber Sahib is situated on the banks of river Kali Bein in Sultanpur Lodhi, district Kapurthala, Punjab. The sacred place where Gurudwara Ber Sahib is present has an historical importance as every morning, Guru Nanak Sahib used to take bath in the river Bein and then sat under the old Ber tree (Zizyphus Jujuba) and meditated here.
HISTORY OF GURUDWARA BER SAHIB
Gurudwara Ber Sahib is the largest Gurudwara of Sultanpur Lodhi. Guru Nanak Dev Ji stayed at Sultanpur Lodhi for about 14 years. Every morning, before sunrise during the Amritvela, Guru Nanak ji used to take bath in the river Bein. Gurudwara is built at the site where young Nanak ji would sit under the old Ber tree (Zizyphus Jujuba) for meditation everyday. The sacred Ber tree and the meditation site is still well preserved by the Gurudwara committee.
One morning Guru Nanak Dev Ji disappeared in the river and as per sikh chronicles he had a direct communion with the God. According to Janam Sakhis, Baba Nanak saw a light and followed it into the river. The locals thought that he had drowned in the river stream as no one was able to find him for 2-3 days. After 3 days, Guru Nanak re-appeared at a site 2-3 kms away which is now known by the name of Gurudwara Sant Ghat Sahib and the words uttered by him were " No one is Hindu, no one is Musalman. We all are human beings."
HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE OF SULTANPUR LODHI
Sultanpur Lodhi is a town in Kapurthala district of Punjab and is known for the historical Gurudwaras that are related to Guru Nanak Dev Ji's life. Sultanpur Lodhi is the place where Bebe Nanki ( the elder sister of Guru Nanak) got married to Bhai Jai Ram Ji. Sultanpur Lodhi is the place where Guru Nanak ji used to work at Modi Khana. Sultanpur Lodhi is the place where Guru Nanak disappeared in the river Kali Bein and then re-emerged at a spot 3 kms away which is now known as Gurudwara Sant Ghat Sahib. Sultanpur Lodhi is the place where after marriage, Guru Nanak stayed with his wife and children, that place is known as Gurudwara Guru Ka Baag. Baba Nanak spent about 14 years 9 months 13 days of his lifetime before setting out on spiritual udasis with Bhai Mardana ji to spread the message of God around the world.
